Blessed Stanley Rother

U.S. Born Priest and Martyr

Stanley Francis Rother was an American Roman Catholic priest from Oklahoma who was murdered in Guatemala in 1981. He had worked as a missionary priest there since 1968.   On December 1, 2016, Pope Francis confirmed that Rother had died a martyr, murdered for his faith.  He is the first U.S.-born priest and martyr to be beatified by the Catholic Church.

• Died:   July 28, 1981 (aged 46)
  
• Buried:  Fr. Rother is interred within the Altar of the Blessed Stanley Rother Shrine, Oklahoma City. At the request of his Guatemalan parishioners, however, his heart and blood were interred beneath the floor of the parish church in Santiago Atitlán.
  
• Beatified: September 23, 2017, Cox Convention Center, Oklahoma City by Cardinal Angelo Amato, S.D.B.
