Ministry to the Separated and Divorced

Mary Mother of God Clergy recognizes the pain, frustration, and loneliness in the lives of our Separated and Divorced Catholics. Those feelings have been a part of the lives of so many Catholics over the years, but perhaps have not been met by the Church with the empathy and consideration that there could have been. Today, we recognize that omission and are introducing sessions in which the clergy reaches out to these people with support and meaningful suggestions emphasizing the understanding and mercy of Christ Himself.

The Metuchen Diocese initiated Facilitator Training in early 2014 for future leaders in the diocese to introduce a program for Separated and Divorced Catholics.  Our Deacon Jake McCormick and his wife, Mary, are trained facilitators and enthusiastically support the Program. The first twelve-week sessions for Separated and Divorced Catholics were completed on December 1, 2014 with twelve participants in our Parish. It is a two-way sharing program with opportunities for questions and answers. Discussions offered consolation, the supporting love of Christ, and suggestions for coping with the difficulties that the participants face.  Anticipated expressions about the hope that Pope Francis raises by his opening investigations on issues related to Divorced Catholics were considered.

Participants were encouraging that an additional program might be done this year for more parishioners and that they would like to return for a few sessions with their same group. It is anticipated that information on dealing with the ANNULMENT process would be offered. Ultimately, the program will evolve with additions to the subject matter in the program and be recognized as a formal ministry in our Parish.
